My Dance Photography Mentorship & Guide

This guidebook is the result of my Honors Mentor Connection class. During my first semester research, I identified that photo shoots with student dancers are most successful if they are very well planned.  I also learned that small details (hair, attire, lighting, timing, posing) can make a big impact on the final image.  Since most photo shoots are limited to less than two hours, it’s impractical to use a trial-and-error method to achieve the desired shots.  Therefore, I recognized the need to create a guide for dancers to help in planning and executing a dance photo shoot.

My goal is to provide a guide that will benefit both dancers and photographers by making the process more efficient.  This guide includes examples and explanations of how different choices in hair, attire and posing can result in very different images.

I hope dancers will benefit from examples and advice that will help them to achieve photos that they love.  I also hope that photographers benefit from clients who have a clear vision of the photo results they would like.  If their clients like the photos, they will be more likely to buy more of them.  Satisfied clients will also lead to more referrals.
